ARPANET was the first host to host network back in 1969. From there they came up with Transmission Control/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) which allowed different networks communicate with each other by transferring packets to each other in 1972. When the internet began to increase in numbers, they had to come up with a better way to keep up with the many host names. So, they came up with the Domain Name System (DNS) that gave each host an Internet address. Now it is known as the World Wide Web.
